While Singapore was still part of Malaysia, the central government in Kuala Lumpur approved the temporary lifting of the firecracker ban on 16 February 1965, during the Lantern Festival. In areas with large Chinese populations, people happily set off firecrackers on chap goh meh (yuan xiao), enjoying the festive joy of the holiday.
