The flea market was well known for selling cheap secondhand goods, and drew crowds that were attracted to these great bargains. However, in the 1970s, the government started to regulate street hawkers at this market due to urban and resettlement efforts. In 1982, makeshift stalls were torn down, and the market was reduced to half its size. In 2011, the market was further reduced due to the construction of the Downtown MRT Line. In 2017, the market was officially closed.
