Golden Mile Complex was an iconic Brutalist-style building, opened in 1972. The stepped terraces design provided residents with private open-air terraces while allowing for natural ventilation and sunlight. The complex was one of the government's earliest urban renewal projects to revitalise the area, which consisted of squatter settlements. This mixed-use development was one of the first of its kind in Singapore, where city planners shifted away from segregated living and shopping spaces.
