In the past, many of Singapore’s coastal areas were occupied by fishing villages. The Tuas area in the west was formerly swamp land with a fishing village inhabited by mostly Teochew and Malay families. In the 1970s, Tuas was developed for industrial use, and residents were relocated to public housing estates.
