Despite the urban development happening in the area, Sungei Road Flea Market was still thriving in the 1970s. During that time, there were efforts by the government to relocate peddlers into government-built markets and out of main streets and five-foot-ways (roofed walkways found outside shops). A lot of these makeshift stalls were torn down by the government in 1982.
