In 1977, the first blocks of HDB (Housing and Development Board) houses along Kelantan Road were built. This was just across fron Sungei Road Flea Market, and the market space was reduced due to urban renewal in 1978. This forced some sellers to move, but it still remained a popular street market due to the attractive prices of goods. The market was fully closed in 2017.
