The flea market began in the 1930s and was popular for secondhand goods until it closed in 2017. It was called Robinson Petang, a jab at Robinsons department store for the wealthy, and Gek Sng Kio after the nearby ice factory. It was also notoriously known as the Thieves Market for reselling stolen goods.
