Trishaw riders fundraised for Nanyang University on Bencoolen Street. Before 1958, Malayan Chinese high school graduates had to study in China, but this became difficult by the 1950s. The Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan proposed a local Chinese university. Funded by the association’s chairman and community donations, Nanyang University was officially opened in 1958.
