Champion shuttler: Badminton player Wong Peng Soon was the first Asian to win the All-England Open Badminton Championships in 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1955. He was also part of the Malayan team that won the Thomas Cup in 1949, 1952 and 1955. He became the first Singaporean athlete to be conferred the Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1956 for services to sport in Malaya. (June 4,1955)
