The Area Licensing Scheme (ALS), which had been in operation for 23 years, was replaced by the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system in 1998. Its gantries, like these at Prince Edward Road, were replaced with new ERP ones. With the ERP system, toll payment and collection became automated, reducing the inconvenience of having to buy a physical licence. (Aug 31, 1998)
