Crowds queueing for tickets to the Malaysia Cup semi-final match between Singapore and Selangor at the National Stadium were kept in line at first, but all hell broke loose once sales began. Many elbowed and pushed their way forward, trying to jump the queue. Amid the chaos, people, including children, fell and were trampled. One man died of a heart attack and 44 others were injured.
