About This Image:

Each year on the Sunday a week before Deepavali, thousands of devotees, with a minority of non-Indians and non-Hindus, take part in a traditional Tamil ceremony. They walk barefoot over burning embers in the Theemithi firewalking ritual at Sri Mariamman Temple as a way of honouring the goddess Draupadi, concluding two months of sacred ceremonies showing deep faith and devotion.
